The Jim Masterson technique

Writer's picture: Poppy PeachPoppy Peach

Today my wonderful trainer Mandi came for a session with me and Bracken, and he did brilliantly, as per usual. However, today I really wanted to write about what she did at the end for him. I had never heard of the Jim Masterson technique until she introduced it to me, and it was really incredible to watch the affect it had on him. All she did was apply an incredibly light touch along certain points of his bladder meridian, which brings his awareness to these points, where horses often hold tension, - similar to how humans often hold tension in the shoulders. Horses then instinctively respond to this and release the tension themselves by yawning, licking and chewing, and so on. Apparently, it also often makes them lie down! (not Bracken unfortunately). I have really fallen in love with doing this and now do it most days with Bracken.

I also showed my friend how to do it on Bracken and she found it really meditative and grounding too - so it can clearly benefit us as well. I love that it never asks the horse to do anything. You just stay with them, in that moment, until they relax and turn soft, which also helps the bond between you. What else I like about the Jim Masterson technique is that, unlike some healing approaches, it doesn't leave the horse emotionally vulnerable. If you are interested in trying this with your horse, let me know and I'll make a video guide and post it on youtube.
